From the Superintendent: Approaching the Holidays and Looking Ahead

Dear Maercker D60 Community,

The excitement and energy in our schools continue to roar as we approach winter break. Our Wildcats are deeply engaged in their learning, and across our schools, students are also preparing for upcoming concerts, athletic events, and performances, encouraged every step of the way by our dedicated D60 team.

This year, we have placed a strong emphasis on literacy development, supporting students’ social-emotional well-being, and promoting positive behavior. We continue to monitor student data with care and attention, ensuring we provide targeted supports, enrich learning opportunities, and meet the diverse needs of all students in our community.

I am incredibly proud of our school leadership teams and staff, who work together each day to foster a school culture built around connection, collaboration, and continuous improvement. We talk a lot about having a growth mindset and being open to adjusting our approach, and being able to see the results of that work is really powerful.

As we look ahead to winter break, I want to wish you a joyful holiday season filled with meaningful time with friends and family. Our D60 community reflects many cultures, languages, and traditions, and it is an honor to learn from the ways our families celebrate, reflect, and gather. Thank you for the care, partnership, and contributions you bring to our schools.

Looking ahead to 2026, we are excited to continue creating learning environments where every student feels seen, valued, and supported. We are eager to see our Wildcats in school each day during this final stretch before break and look forward to carrying this momentum into the new year.

Regards,
Dr. Sean Nugent
Superintendent

50 Years of Westview Hills

We are continuing to celebrate 50 years of Westview Hills Middle School by looking back on the five decades of learning and growth that this school has been a part of. After looking back in the archives, we wanted to share another piece of history, the official invitation and program for the Open House which took place on Sunday, Oct. 26, 1975.

"The new Westview Hills Middle School was built to provide students in grades 6-8 with a modern and comprehensive educational program and meet the needs of a growing school system.

As a result of the building program, boys and girls are now able to gain new experience in industrial arts, home economics and foreign language as well as receive enriched benefits through improved facilities in library, music, physical education, and science."

The invitation showcased some of the different spaces including industrial arts, band room, and the student commons and showcased the building as "A school for now and the future" which we can confirm was a success!

Check out images of the invitation below and stay tuned for more looks back in 2026.
